“JACK?” shouted Maddy, fury and relief sweeping through her. She ran out of the house and grabbed his arm, shaking him. “What are you doing? You frightened us to death!”

“My camera!” wailed Rachel, spotting it in the shadows a few metres away. She went over and picked it up. “Oh, Maddy, I think it’s broken!”

“Yes, that’s because he scared me so much that I dropped it,” snapped Maddy, glaring at her little brother.

“I only wanted to help!” he whimpered, yanking against her grasp. “You’re trying to catch the thief, right? I want to catch him too, and get my bike back, that’s all!”

“Oh, Jack,” moaned Maddy, dropping his arm. “Look, I know you want to help, but—”

Light spilled over the garden as the back door opened. “Are you lot outside?” called Dad. “Come on in – it’s too dark to be playing out here. And Maddy, put your bike away! I should think you’d know better after what happened today.”

The door closed again. Maddy heaved a sigh. She knew they couldn’t try again tonight. Dad would be keeping an eye out now.

“Thanks a lot,” she muttered to Jack as she picked up her bike and wheeled it back towards the shed. “You’ve ruined everything!”

That night Maddy and Rachel curled up on Maddy’s bed in their nighties, attempting vainly to come up with another plan.

“I’ll just have to try again on my own tomorrow night, that’s all,” said Maddy, trying to hide the tremor in her voice. She wasn’t keen on the idea of returning to the Wendy house by herself in the dark. If only she had her cat vision!

Rachel looked worried. “Oh, Maddy! I wish I could stay over tomorrow night too. But Mum would never let me, not two nights in a row.”
